Our Work
We advocate and campaign for the Rights of Nature. We do this through: the use of soft power, adapting the governance of organisations; conducting research on cutting-edge legal concepts related to Nature; and through lobbying and policy work at the local, national and international level.
Bringing Nature into business, organisational and educational settings to shift hearts, minds and dialogues.
We work with organisations across all sectors to help them to bring the voice of Nature into their governance structures.
We offer education and training to businesses and individuals who are interested in incorporating Nature into their governance structures, interested in becoming a Nature director/ trustee, or want to learn more about rights of Nature.
Our team is available to book for panel talks, keynote speeches and events and media interviews.
We produce reports and publications on the work we are doing to inform others. We have a number of toolkits available to assist others to do this work.
‘Rights of Nature’ proposes that Nature – in general and/or ecosystems and species – should have legal rights and the ability to act (via human representatives) in the legal system. This is based on an ecocentric way of thinking which recognises that human beings live as just one interconnected part of a huge ecological world and that the non-human world has inherent value beyond human’s use of it. Further, human health and wellbeing is intertwined with the wellbeing of the rest of Nature. This idea underpins much of what we do. It forms our basic orientation with regards to Nature and is part of understanding our place in the world. We conduct research on topics relating to the Rights of Nature and are involved in advocacy to further the realisation of Rights of Nature in the UK. We offer support to groups, organisations and campaigns looking to realise and defend the Rights of Nature. Our work on Nature-positive governance is about encouraging businesses to internalise a Rights of Nature approach in their organisation.
We work with organisations who want to ensure their activities are better aligned with the interests of the natural world. We support them to change internal governance structures and embed the voice of Nature into their organisations.
We worked with Faith in Nature in collaboration with the Earth Law Centre, to appoint a Nature Director to their Board. This is one of a set of changes which we recommend and can support.
The current range of possible changes is:
Changing the purpose of the organisation to be Nature-positive
High-level Nature representation, such as a Nature Director or Nature Trustee
Making Nature a shareholder
Transparency and accountability, such as public reporting of impacts
Training and education about being Nature-positive
Internal governance processes
This is a story about Lawyers for Nature’s work on what was variously known as the Dulwich Oaks or Save the Footbridge Oaks Campaign. I was contacted out of the blue by a member of the campaign who had heard about Lawyers for Nature and our work saving trees.
